How to make bulletproof coffee

Would you like to make your own bulletproof coffee?

Bulletproof coffee is plain old black coffee with a couple of unexpected twists. Instead of milk and sugar in your coffee, it is replaced with 1-2 tablespoons of unsalted butter and MCT oil (medium chain triglyceride oil), then blended. Drinking coffee in this form is supposed to boost energy and promote weight loss. These ingredients offer a smooth, buttery consistency transforming your coffee into a delectable treat.

It has become a popular trend among celebrities and fitness junkies. Though the trend is recent, the idea of butter in coffee is not a new one. It has been used in traditional coffee recipes in Vietnam, Singapore, Ethiopia and across the specific populations of Nepal and northern India. Bulletproof coffee is integrated as a meal replacement (typically breakfast) due to its high caloric value of 450 calories per serve.

You may be thinking “How does drinking 450 calories of a morning help anybody?”. This large calorie intake may seem unreasonable but the claimed benefits that come with it measure up.

So why put butter and MCT oil in your coffee?

First of things first what you want to be using is unsalted grass-fed butter. This is the butter that carries the vitamins, omega-3s and antioxidants that make up a part of the health benefits that putting it in your coffee provides. Other benefits that are highlighted in professional barista training of adding butter to your morning coffee include a boost to your metabolism aiding your body in burning fat, and work with the coffee to create a sustainable source of energy to keep you alert for longer. The medium chain triglyceride oil works with the butter, providing a second round of strength to the energy and weight loss benefits as well as enhancing focus and overall brain function.

Make your own bulletproof coffee following the steps below.

You will need:

  • Coffee grounds or instant coffee
  • Boiled water
  • 1-2 tablespoons of unsalted grass-fed butter
  • 1-2 tablespoons of MCT Oil

Procedure:

Step 1: Boil your kettle and pour into a mug with instant coffee, or to brew your coffee grounds however you prefer.

Step 2: Add the coffee, butter and MTC oil together into a blender. Blend on low building speed until fully combined.

Tip: If you have separated oil on top of the liquid it hasn’t blended properly. Keep blending and switch to a finer blender, such as a handheld, if it does not cooperate.
