Everything you need to know about Single Origin
Open up your palate and your entire experience of coffee flavour by trying out a single origin…or ten. With exotic flavours and interesting pairings, it’s important to continue trying new coffees as a barista to continue developing your knowledge.
If you want to know what a wine will taste like you ask for the name of the grapes. For beer you may want to know its hops concentration. For coffee it’s all about where it’s grown. Believe it or not those hard, little beans have a terroir, the taste of the natural environment they were grown in. In fact terroir is the main factor in the flavour of coffee.
What’s in a Single Origin?
It isn’t me who is going to convince you but the coffee itself.
The best opportunity for that is to attend a coffee cupping, an internationally agreed on standard for testing the aromas and tastes of different coffees. When cafés get in new Single Origins the faithful will gather.
When we talk about single origins, we are literally referring to the origin of this coffee bean. Ethiopia, Guatamala, Brasil, Indonesia, you name it. At Black Market Roasters, we order in three or four new single origins every month. So much coffee in the world and so little time to try it all. Circulating single origins every month is great for our customers, as we can always find something to suit people’s different preferences.
