Summit Blend & The Adventure That Inspired It

Snow-covered alpine landscape in the Snowy Mountains, Australia — the inspiration behind Black Market Coffee's Summit Blend

Summit Blend & The Adventure That Inspired It

A few years ago, a mate and I headed down to the Snowy Mountains to tackle the Main Range Loop.

For most people, it's a day walk. You can knock it over in a long day and be back at the pub before dark.

But that wasn't really the point.

We decided to slow things down, carry everything on our backs and make a weekend of it. The plan was simple: hike the loop, summit Mount Kosciuszko, camp overnight and enjoy a couple of days in one of Australia's most spectacular alpine landscapes.

What we didn't plan for was the snow.

It was November. We'd expected cool conditions, maybe a bit of wind, but certainly not a full alpine experience. Thankfully, we were prepared with warm gear and plenty of layers because by the time we reached the higher sections of the range, winter wasn't quite finished with us.

The track disappeared beneath fresh snow.

Visibility dropped.

The wind picked up.

And what had started as a relatively straightforward hike suddenly felt a little more adventurous.

There were moments where I found myself saying, "It's all good, we've got this."

The funny thing was, I wasn't entirely convinced.

At times we were scrambling across icy sections on our hands and feet, trying to work out where the track was supposed to be. Snow and cloud blurred the landscape into one endless shade of white. Every now and then we'd stop, check our bearings and keep moving.

Nothing extreme.

Nothing life-threatening.

But definitely enough to push us outside our comfort zone.

That's often where the best adventures live.

One of the memories that still stands out is the river crossings. To avoid soaking our boots, we'd take our shoes off and wade through the freezing alpine water. Anyone who knows me knows I don't handle the cold particularly well, so those crossings felt far more challenging than they probably were.

The water was numbingly cold.

The air wasn't much warmer.

And somehow that made the experience even better.

Because adventure isn't always about doing something epic. Sometimes it's simply about choosing the harder path, embracing a little discomfort and discovering that you're capable of more than you thought.

As the weather shifted and the clouds occasionally opened, we'd catch glimpses of the landscape around us. Snow-covered ridgelines. Alpine plains. The highest peaks in Australia stretching into the distance.

Wild.

Beautiful.

Completely unforgettable.

Years later, when we started talking about creating a winter coffee, I found myself thinking back to that trip.

Not because of the mountain itself, but because of what it represented.

The feeling of standing somewhere exposed and remote.

The reward that comes from pushing through uncertainty.

The warmth you crave after a day spent in the elements.

That's where Summit Blend was born.

It's a coffee inspired by alpine mornings, mountain air and the adventures that sit just beyond our comfort zone. The kind of coffee you want waiting for you at the end of a long hike, beside a camp stove before sunrise, or wrapped between your hands after a cold morning outdoors.

Because sometimes the best experiences aren't the easiest ones.

Sometimes they're the ones where you have to keep taking the next step, even when the track isn't completely clear.

And when you finally reach the summit, the view is always worth it.

Where the map ends, the good stuff begins.
