Can You Use Pre Ground Coffee in an Espresso Machine?
Yes, as long as it's ground fine enough for espresso. There are two catches. Ground coffee goes stale much faster than whole beans, and you can't adjust the grind to dial in your shot. Pre ground works best in machines with pressurised (dual wall) baskets, which are designed to be forgiving with it.
Why the grind matters so much
An espresso machine pushes hot water through the coffee in about 25 to 30 seconds. To pull enough flavour out in that time, the coffee has to be ground very fine, close to the texture of fine sand.
If the grind is too coarse, like plunger or filter grind, the water rushes straight through and you get a thin, sour, watery shot. So if you're buying ground coffee for your machine, make sure it says espresso grind. Grinds labelled for all brewing methods tend to be a compromise that's too coarse for espresso.
How to get the most out of pre ground coffee
Buy smaller bags. Once coffee is ground, it loses aroma within days. A 250 gram bag lasts about a week at two coffees a day, which is about right.
Buy from a roaster who prints a roast date. Ground coffee that's been sitting on a shelf for months starts at a disadvantage before you even open it.
Store it properly. Keep it in an airtight container away from heat and light. Skip the fridge, where it picks up moisture and smells. Here's more on how to store coffee.
Use your dose to adjust. Since you can't change the grind, the amount of coffee you use is your main lever. If shots run fast and taste sour, add a little more coffee to the basket. If they run slow and taste bitter, use a little less.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use plunger or filter coffee in an espresso machine?
It'll run through, but it won't taste good. The grind is too coarse, so the shot comes out weak and sour.
How long does ground coffee stay fresh?
It starts losing flavour within days of grinding. Use it within a week or two of opening for the best results.
Is it worth buying a grinder?
If you want to get serious about espresso, a grinder is the biggest upgrade you can make. It lets you grind fresh for every shot and adjust the grind to dial in. Until then, good pre ground coffee is better than stale whole beans.
Is supermarket espresso grind the same?
The grind might be similar, but supermarket coffee is often months past roasting by the time you buy it. We compare the two in specialty vs supermarket coffee.
You can choose espresso grind on any of our blends, including Liberty and Rhythm. We roast every week and print the roast date on every bag.
