Australia's Morning Ritual

Two people sitting at Bondi beach holding a black market coffee coffee cup

Mornings have always been my favourite part of the day.

There’s something about the quiet energy of early morning that feels full of possibility. Before the noise of the day kicks in, before the emails and the to-do lists, there’s a small window where you get to choose how your day begins.

For Angus and I, mornings have always been a big part of our lives. Surf checks. Coffee. Beach walks. Getting the kids ready. Some days it’s calm and slow, other days it’s chaotic and loud, but there’s usually a small ritual in there somewhere that helps everything click into place.

Lately we’ve been thinking a lot about this idea of morning rituals.

At Black Market we’ve started a new campaign called “Australia’s Morning Ritual.” The idea is simple. We want to learn how people start their day. What they eat for breakfast. What lights them up in the morning. What little habits or rituals help them feel ready to take on the day.

Because starting the day well means something different to everyone.

For some people it’s a run along the beach.
For others it’s a quiet coffee before the house wakes up.
For some it’s music in the kitchen while making breakfast for the kids.

But whatever it is, when you get it right, it sets the tone for everything that follows.

Last week we decided to start our little research project in Bondi.

Bondi has always felt like a place where mornings really matter. The beach is alive early — surfers heading out, runners doing laps along the promenade, swimmers lining up for the ocean pool, and cafés already buzzing before most of the city has woken up.

Angus and I both spent a lot of years living in the eastern suburbs — Bronte and Coogee — so the whole area feels close to our hearts. A lot of the things we love personally live there: surfing, early swims, beach walks, good coffee and people who genuinely enjoy being up early.

It felt like the perfect place to start asking a simple question:

What is Bondi’s morning ritual?

So we grabbed a camera and spent the morning chatting with locals.

We asked everyone the same two questions:

  1. What do you eat for breakfast?

  2. What makes a good morning great?

The answers were exactly what we expected. Some people were all about eggs and protein. Others were loyal to a muesli and oats. A few people said they didn’t eat breakfast at all but couldn’t function without coffee first.

But the second question was the interesting one.

People talked about ocean swims. Walking the dog. Surfing before work. Running. Watching the sunrise.

It reminded us that the real magic of mornings isn’t necessarily the food or the coffee. It’s the little moments that make you feel grounded before the day begins.

While we were in the area we also popped into UpSouth, an epic Bondi local café that we’re lucky enough to supply coffee to.

The place is run by a young couple who are genuinely passionate about baking and hospitality. They show up every day for their customers and do all the little things that make a café feel special — amazing food, warm service, and that feeling that you’re part of the neighbourhood when you walk in the door.

We’re incredibly proud to be partnered with them.

And the breakfast definitely lived up to the hype.

I had poached eggs on labneh with chilli — one of those dishes that is simple but perfectly balanced. And then of course there were the baked goods… matcha pistachio croissants and Biscoff matcha cookies that were honestly next level.

The kind of breakfast that makes you want to stay a little longer.

That morning reminded us why we love cafés so much. They’re not just places to grab coffee. They’re where people begin their day, catch up with friends, reset their mood, or carve out a quiet moment before work.

They’re part of people’s morning rituals.

And that’s really what this whole project is about.

Over the coming months we’re going to keep asking people the same two questions. In cafés, on beaches, on street corners, wherever the morning takes us.

Because if there’s one thing we’ve learned already, it’s that mornings mean something different to everyone.

But when you start the day in a way that feels right for you — whatever that looks like — it can change everything.

And we think that’s worth celebrating. If you want to follow along, we'll be documenting it on our Tiktok here
