Best Brew methods

Stovetop/Moka Pot

First patented in 1933 by a dude named Luigi, forget the complex physics of the espresso machine, just give me the coffee! Some say it rivals commercial espresso, I say it is awesome, though slightly different. This little contraption achieves about 1.5 bars of pressure when extracting with the slurry reaching 100 deg Celsius.

Tip: Ensure you have fresh, correctly ground coffee and try to pull the contraption off the heat just prior to the gurgling sound so the coffee solution doesn’t boil

Aeropress

Invented in 2005 by Mr Alan, the Aeropress is a coffee nerd favourite travelling buddy. It is cheap, compact and produces a decent brew strength given its simplicity. Brewing at about 75-80 deg Celsius you would not typically put milk with this drink as it is light enough to drink black.

Tip: As always, use fresh correctly ground coffee and be consistent with your methodology during extraction, i.e. steep time, grammage, agitation, water temp to ensure you can find what works best for you

Pourover/filter

This method is one of our favourite at Black Market Roasters because you do so little to the coffee. This is the arena where great quality coffee beans shine and lower quality coffee is very evident. By being very specific with the weights and temps used, you place the ground coffee inside the filter cone, pour hot water in a specific way over the grounds for about 2-2.5 mins and what results is a gentle, tea like liquid that will linger in your mouth for hours.

Plunger

Most people are probably familiar with this contraption, though many do not use it well. It was first patented in 1929 by Mr Calimani and still lives on today. Due to the pressure applied, it yields more solubles in the cup than most of the other filter methods and hence it is perceived to be stronger. The simplicity of this is astounding and provides a great way to appreciate quality coffee.

Espresso Machine

In 1884, a gentleman by the name of Mr Moriondo went about achieving a patent for ‘New Steam Machinery’ which would be transformed into an everyday part of the urban landscape of any Western-style city. Using sometimes complicated science of temperatures and steam and boilers, the espresso machine basically means from a barista point of view, any change in what you do, is amplified by the pressure applied during the process. So precision accuracy and of course the right set-up is crucial.
